Latin America independence celebrations take centre stage throughout September, with national days and independence anniversaries marked across Central and South America.

On 15 September, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua mark Central American Independence Day, commemorating their 1821 independence from Spain.
For Guatemala, the date also offers a connection with one of the country’s key Caribbean trade gateways. Puerto Barrios was named in honour of former president Justo Rufino Barrios, who pushed through plans to link Guatemala City with an Atlantic port by rail back in the 19th century. Today, Puerto Barrios remains one of Central America’s primary Atlantic/Caribbean ports helping connect the country with markets across the Americas and beyond.
Mexico follows on 16 September with Día de la Independencia. Celebrations begin on the evening before, when towns and cities recreate the famous Grito de Dolores — the 1810 call that helped launch Mexico’s independence movement. It is one of the country’s biggest national celebrations and a major date in the Mexican calendar.
Chile celebrates its Fiestas Patrias on 18 September, marking the formation of its first national government in 1810. The holiday is widely celebrated with parades, traditional food, music and community events, with many businesses operating on reduced hours or closing around the extended festivities.
The Caribbean is represented on 19 September, when St Kitts and Nevis celebrates independence, followed by Belize on 21 September.
Finally, Paraguay marks Victory at Boquerón Day on 29 September. Not an indepence day as such, but a national public holiday commemorating a pivotal battle of the Chaco War.
