Argentinian Legend Hits The Century
Legendary Argentinian footballer, Lionel Messi – scored his 100th goal for his country yesterday, passing the milestone with the first goal in a hat trick against Curaçao.
World Cup winners Argentina thrashed the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao 7-0 in a friendly match in Santiago Del Estero, with over 40,000 of his compatriots there to witness this remarkable achievement.
Only last week, Messi scored his 800th professional career goal during a 2-0 win over Panama in Buenos Aires, with the two recent games built up as the team’s World Cup homecoming tour.
Messi is one of only three players that have achieved this milestone for their country. Having now scored 102 goals he is only behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (122) and Iran’s Ali Daei (109).
While the team here at Envío support our home nations, we always closely follow the Latin American teams due to our close links to the region as it is our specialist market. You may remember our Latin American office sweepstake during the Qatar World Cup, which was won when Josh Sweeney was lucky enough to draw Argentina.
