Celebrating Christmas The Latin American Way
Some customs feel familiar, others delightfully different—that’s the magic of Christmas in Latin America. Below are some of the region’s most beloved Christmas traditions.
Nochebuena
Nochebuena is celebrated on the night of December 24, when families gather for a festive dinner filled with laughter, stories, and traditional foods. As midnight nears, people toast, exchange well-wishes, and open gifts, often celebrating into the early hours of Christmas Day before reuniting again for lunch. In many parts of Latin America, the 24th has much more significance than the 25th owing to the prevalent Catholic traditions. Food is central to the night, with dishes such as turkey, tamales, and seasonal sweets varying by country. Sharing these meals strengthens family bonds and captures the joyful spirit of the occasion.
Día de Reyes
Christmas celebrations continue until Día de los Reyes Magos on January 6. Families come together to exchange gifts, enjoy sweet bread and hot chocolate, and honour the Three Wise Men. For children, it often means another round of presents.
Villancicos
Villancicos, traditional Christmas songs from Spain, are sung at home and during public celebrations, spreading joy and togetherness through music.
Belenes
Belénes, or Nativity scenes, are cherished decorations that emphasise the spiritual meaning of Christmas, ranging from simple home displays to elaborate public exhibits.

Argentina and Uruguay
Christmas trees are usually decorated by 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Cotton balls may be used to mimic snow, while Christmas dinner often features a barbecue, followed by pan dulce or panettone. After Midnight Mass, fireworks are lit and globos (paper lanterns) are released.
Brazil
Celebrations reflect Portuguese influence, from nativity scenes to the Christmas play Los Pastores. Children leave a sock for Papai Noel or Bom Velhinho, while friends exchange gifts through amigo secreto. In rural areas, Folia de Reis runs from Christmas Eve to Epiphany on 6 January and cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro shine with elaborate decorations.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica enjoys a tropical Christmas, with flowers decorating homes and nativity scenes. Children await Niño Dios, and Midnight Mass is followed by tamales, rum punch, and eggnog. The Tope horseback parade takes place on 26 December.
Guatemala
No two Christmases are alike but shared customs include building Nativity scenes with the family with local touches such as colourful dyed sawdust as decoration. Sweet and savory tamales are enjoyed, fireworks mark midnight, and gifts are then opened.
Mexico
Children perform Las Posadas, reenacting Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter. Mexico also celebrates Epiphany with Rosca de Reyes on 6 January, with festivities continuing until Candelaria on 2 February.
Venezuela
Venezuela is known for gaita music from Zulia, fireworks, nativity scenes instead of Christmas trees, and even roller-skating to church in Caracas. Traditional dishes include hallacas and pan de jamón.
