How a Tiny Caribbean Island Became A Tech Goldmine

When the internet began to take shape in the 1980s and 1990s, every country was handed a two-letter domain suffix: .uk for the United Kingdom, .jp for Japan, and so on.

At the time, it was a bureaucratic necessity, not a financial windfall but for the Caribbean island of Anguilla, with its “.ai tag” assigned in 1995, the dawn of the internet quietly delivered a jackpot that would take decades to reveal itself.

Today, with the meteoric growth of artificial intelligence, .ai has become one of the most fashionable and sought-after domain extensions in the world. Startups, tech giants, and solo entrepreneurs alike are clamouring to associate their brands with AI, and securing a domain ending in .ai has become a statement of credibility.

The demand has sparked record-breaking sales. US tech boss Dharmesh Shah, cofounder of HubSpot, reportedly paid $700,000 for the domain you.ai not too long ago. In July 2025, cloud.ai sold for about $600,000, while law.ai changed hands for $350,000 just weeks later.

The numbers tell the story. In 2020, there were fewer than 50,000 .ai websites. Fast forward to 2025, and that figure has ballooned to over 850,000 and doubled in the last 12 months alone.

For Anguilla, the boom has transformed the national budget. The government reported $39 million in domain revenues in 2024, accounting for nearly a quarter of the nation’s total income. For 2025, revenues are projected to climb to $50 million.

Last year, Anguilla signed a five-year partnership with a US technology firm specialising in domain name registries to help manage the surge in demand. The firm reportedly takes a 10% share of revenue.

Lessons appear to have been learnt from the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, whose .tv domain gained value with the rise of online video. In 1998, Tuvalu signed away exclusive rights to a US company for a flat fee of just $2 million a year.

In 2021, Tuvalu renegotiated for a percentage-based deal now worth around $10 million annually, but many argue they missed out on hundreds of millions during the streaming boom.

With AI technologies only accelerating, .ai is likely to remain a prized digital commodity for years to come.

The Caribbean island’s unexpected role in the artificial intelligence economy highlights how, in the digital age, even the smallest nations can hold resources every bit as valuable as oil or natural gas.
