Hurricane Melissa Pounds The Caribbean, Disrupting Logistics
The Caribbean is facing the prospect of unprecedented destruction as Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, sweeps through the region with winds reaching 160-170 mph and storm surges of up to 15 feet expected. Meteorologists warn it may be the strongest storm ever recorded in the area.
The hurricane has already claimed lives in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, and will next be tracking toward Cuba, where further devastation is expected. In Jamaica, authorities have ordered widespread evacuations, describing the storm as “life-threatening” and warning of catastrophic flooding, landslides, and destructive waves.
Airports in Cuba and Jamaica have been temporarily closed, with numerous international flights – including to and from the UK – cancelled as safety measures intensify. Ocean freight operations are also suffering disruption, with cargo vessels rerouted to avoid the hurricane’s path.
Severe damage to infrastructure is anticipated, potentially disrupting local logistics services for weeks as recovery efforts are likely to take considerable time.
