Independence Day Season In Latin America

September 06, 2024

We’re in the middle of ‘Independence Day Season’ in Latin America, as a host of public holidays mark the dates that several countries officially became independent, largely from Spain.

Colombia became the first independent country in South America on July 20th 1810, while Argentina, Venezuela and Peru also mark their political independence from the Spanish Monarchy every July.

Uruguay’s marking of independence just passed on August 25th, when the country celebrated the anniversary of the day it separated from Brazil in 1828. August was also the month that both Bolivia and Ecuador commemorated liberation from Spain.

Brazil gained its own independence from Portugal in 1822, and their day is marked by a public holiday tomorrow on 7th September.

Below is a list of the remaining independence day public holidays in Latin America during September.
