New Suape Container Terminal to Boost Brazil’s Trade Capacity
A new container terminal will soon commence operations at the Port of Suape in Pernambuco, Brazil, marking a major step forward for the country’s port infrastructure and regional trade connectivity.
APM Terminals Suape is set to become the first fully electrified container terminal in Latin America when operations begin, reinforcing the role of modern, lower-emission infrastructure in the future of logistics.
Developed at a cost of $350m, the new facility will provide an initial annual handling capacity of 400,000 teu and is expected to increase the port’s total container handling capacity by 55%. This added capacity will support growing demand from importers, exporters, agribusiness and industry across northeastern Brazil.
The terminal is also expected to strengthen Pernambuco’s links with key markets across Latin America, North America, Europe and Asia, creating a new gateway for international trade and improving the region’s logistics competitiveness.
For APM Terminals, Suape represents its second major container terminal in northeastern Brazil, complementing its long-established operation at the Port of Pecém in Ceará.
Brazilian vice-president Geraldo Alckmin described the project as a “leap forward” for infrastructure in Pernambuco and for Brazil’s competitiveness, pointing to reduced costs, greater global integration, more opportunities for agribusiness and industry, and increased job creation.
As it prepares to open its new terminal, the Port of Suape is set to play an important role in expanding Brazil’s trade capacity while supporting a more connected and sustainable port network.
