Venezuela – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town In October
Under fire Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, has incredibly confirmed that Santa Claus will be coming to town early this year and that festivities will begin in October for the crisis-stricken country.
In a TV appearance last week, Maduro announced “It’s September and it already feels like Christmas. So this year, as a way of paying tribute to you and thanking you, I’m going to decree that Christmas be brought forward to 1st October”.
Facing the biggest political challenge of his turbulent 11 year reign, Maduro is seemingly trying to appease the country’s disgruntled population, promising all citizens an early Christmas of “peace, happiness and security”.
Thousands of Venezuelans have been protesting since July’s election result claiming that Maduro’s victory was rigged, a claim that has been echoed by the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and several Latin American nations, who refuse to recognise the widely disputed result.
The opposition candidate, Edmundo González, landed in Madrid this past weekend via a Spanish Air Force plane after fleeing his homeland. González will be granted political asylum in Spain after a warrant for his arrest was issued by Maduro’s government in Venezuela.
This is not the first time Maduro has moved Christmas forward when things are not going well. He has resorted to this deflective manoeuvre previously during an administration that has overseen one of the worst peacetime economic collapses in modern history.
